Student Detained After Falsely Reporting Kidnapping

Chief Winston Tye states on March 12, 2026, Knox County E-911 received a series of calls from an individual claiming they had been kidnapped and were on a bus traveling on US 25E in Barbourville.

Officers with the Barbourville Police Department responded to the report and located two Middlesboro Independent Schools buses in the area. Traffic stops were conducted on both buses as officers investigated the report.

During the investigation, Officer Jaylen Adams identified the individual responsible for making the calls as a juvenile male. The calls were determined to be a prank. The juvenile was detained and transported to the Barbourville Police Department.

Charges will be submitted to the Knox County Court Designated Worker and the Knox County Attorney’s Office for review.
