A Barbourville man is facing multiple charges after allegedly abandoning several young children, including an infant, outside Central Elementary School for more than two hours Tuesday evening.
Kevin Gray, 23, of Barbourville, was arrested on the evening of October 14, after allegedly leaving his juvenile children, including an infant, stranded at Central Elementary School.
Officers of the Barbourville Police Department responded to a complaint that Gray had not returned for his children; Gray would eventually return with two other juveniles, and had requested to see his children.
According to an arrest citation obtained by The Mountain Advocate, Gray reported to officers that he had left his children due to a family emergency concerning his father, who he stated was having a stroke and was at the Corbin hospital, and that he had only been gone for less than an hour.
Upon speaking with two younger boys that Gray arrived with, a 14-year-old, who was accompanying the three younger children, provided witness statements, and camera footage from the school, officers were able to determine the children had been left alone for more than two hours.
Gray had allegedly dropped his two daughters, two and four years-old, along with an infant, approximately three months old and in a car seat, off at the school at approximately 5:45 p.m. He would then proceed to go back to his residence for an unknown amount of time and then travel to Corbin to go hunting. Gray eventually decided it was time to retrieve his children around 8 p.m.
At the time of the report, Gray remains lodged at the Knox County Detention Center, under the charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and wanton endangerment in the second degree. As of Wednesday afternoon, no bond was listed.
Gray is scheduled for an arraignment in Knox District Court on Thursday, October 16.
