Knox County 12U All-Stars Battle Back To Finish District Runner-Up After Remarkable Tournament Run

BARBOURVILLE — The Knox County 12U Softball All-Stars never took the easy road this summer, but they nearly completed one of the most impressive comeback runs of the District 4 Tournament.
After suffering an early heartbreaking loss that dropped them into the loser’s bracket, Knox County responded with five consecutive victories to force a winner-take-all championship game before falling just one run short of a district title. Knox County finished the tournament as District 4 runner-up, displaying outstanding pitching and timely hitting throughout an unforgettable postseason.
The All-Stars opened tournament play with a convincing 16-6 victory over Hazard-Perry behind a balanced offensive attack. Croley Cain, Isabella Abner, Killion Hill, Baylee Jones and Makenna Messer each collected two hits as Knox County built an early lead and never looked back. Makenna Messer earned the complete-game victory in the pitcher’s circle while Campbell Cain, Maci Alsip, Jesslyn Messer, Savannah Scalf, Maggie Collett and Sophia Brown all contributed to the opening-round win.
Knox County’s path became much more difficult in the second round after a heartbreaking 14-13 loss to North Laurel despite collecting 15 hits and building a five-run lead.
Campbell Cain paced the offense with a double, triple and three-hit performance, while Maci Alsip and Baylee Jones each homered. Maggie Collett added two hits and two RBI, and Makenna Messer and Jesslyn Messer also collected two hits apiece, but North Laurel rallied late to hand Knox County its first loss of the tournament.
Facing elimination, Knox County responded in dominant fashion.
The All-Stars rolled past Harlan 15-0 in three innings as Croley Cain tossed a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts while also leading the offense with two hits and three runs scored. Campbell Cain drove in three runs, Killion Hill doubled twice and knocked in two, Maci Alsip added three RBI, Isabella Abner collected two hits and two RBI, and Baylee Jones tripled as Knox County advanced.
Knox County kept its season alive again by defeating Hazard-Perry 8-2 behind another complete team effort. Maci Alsip homered and doubled while Campbell Cain, Croley Cain and Baylee Jones each collected two hits. Makenna Messer struck out nine over five innings before Croley Cain struck out the side in relief to seal the victory.
The momentum continued as Croley Cain dominated Jackson County in a 6-2 victory. Cain struck out 10 in a complete-game effort, while Maci Alsip blasted another home run and drove in two runs. Tanaya Hughes doubled and knocked in two runs, and Croley Cain, Killion Hill and Maggie Collett each recorded two hits as Knox County advanced to championship day. Needing to defeat unbeaten North Laurel twice, Knox County rose to the challenge in the first championship game. Croley Cain tossed a complete game with 12 strikeouts as Knox County earned a 6-3 victory to force a decisive winner-take-all championship. Jesslyn Messer drove in two runs, Maci Alsip tripled and drove in another while Croley Cain and Campbell Cain each collected two hits to keep Knox County’s championship hopes alive.
In the final game of the tournament, Knox County once again refused to quit.
Trailing 6-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the All-Stars rallied with three runs and brought the tying run into scoring position before North Laurel escaped with a 6-5 victory. Killion Hill doubled and drove in two runs, Croley Cain tripled and added an RBI, Maci Alsip collected a hit and RBI, Isabella Abner drove in a run, and Campbell Cain, Tanaya Hughes, Maggie Collett, Savannah Scalf, Sophia Brown, Ava Lawson and Makenna Messer all contributed hits in an 11-hit effort.
The Knox County 12U Softball All-Star roster consisted of Bella Abner, Baylee Jones, Maci Alsip, Makenna Messer, Tanaya Hughes, Jesslyn Messer, Maggie Collett, Killion Hill, Campbell Cain, Croley Cain, Savannah Scalf, Sophia Brown and Ava Lawson.
