A Barbourville man was arrested June 26 after a traffic stop led to the discovery of multiple suspected controlled substances, authorities said in press releases on Monday. The arrest was the result of a joint narcotics investigation by Barbourville Police Department and Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
Barbourville Narcotics Detective Sgt. Karl Middleton received information that the vehicle, a gold GMC Terrain, was traveling on South Ky. 11, and the driver was allegedly in possession of a large quantity of drugs. Knox County Deputy Sgt. Jesse Smith stopped a vehicle expired registration plates on Main Street in Barbourville. During the stop, officers found what was described as a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine, along with pressed tablets believed to be fentanyl, Suboxone strips, and tablets identified as clonazepam and methadone.
A fresh air sniff of the vehicle was conducted after Deputy Lonnie Williams and K-9 Havoc arrived at the scene. K-9 Havoc showed a positive indication alerting officers to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, officers and deputies located a large quantity of methamphetamine, a large quantity of what appeared to be pressed Fentanyl tablets, clonazepam, methadone and suboxone strips.
The driver, Brian Hamilton, 48, of Barbourville, was taken into custody at the scene.
Hamilton is charged with expired registration receipt, no registration plates, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine), first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (fentanyl), and third-degree possession of a controlled substance.
He was lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.
Officers with the Barbourville City Police Department assisted in the arrest. Hamilton is scheduled to be arraigned June 29 in Knox District Court.
