We Are Your Best Option

by Charles Myrick, Publisher

I don’t say it enough, but we truly have one of the best communities I’ve ever seen.
The way our people rally around each other in times of sickness, heartache and likewise celebrate in moments of pride and accomplishment, our people never cease to amaze me.
Our community has been rocked with loss in recent weeks, and I’ve witnessed via social media an outpouring of love and support for the affected families. On the flipside we find ourselves celebrating big wins with our children’s athletics programs. In good and bad, this community shows up.
The news business is not for the weak of heart (or the weak of knees, as I find out anytime I attend something where being on my feet is a difficult thing). It takes a desire to not only showcase the great things going on but also to report the setbacks and the negatives. Not everyone likes those things. I get that. I don’t, either. But if I printed just the things I liked and interested me, this newspaper would be increasingly boring.
In the past couple of years since joining our staff, Kasey Morris (now Morris-Floyd), brought fresh ideas and a renewed purpose for the printed page. From incorporating pets for adoption to showcasing budding poets, our paper contains more “culture” than it has in quite some time. Combining that with our great lineup of columnists, our paper is truly unique and stands apart from our industry peers, and I say that while appreciating our fellow newspapers. Our area is blessed with coverage. There’s not one single newspaper in our region that isn’t a good one. I look at every newspaper in our area and I’m proud of what they accomplish. It’s not just in my capacity as Vice President of the Kentucky Press Association and former board member, but as a fellow journalist and newspaper publisher. It’s great to see what we are all doing!
I am thankful for new advertisers willing to take a bet on a traditional, yet proven, means of marketing. Newspapers don’t get the traffic we once did — that’s a fact everyone can see — but, we aren’t dead. Nowhere near it.
Newspapers, in print, combined with digital in the ways of social media and our websites, offer a myriad of marketing opportunities that not everyone can offer.
Did you know that when advertising in print and digital, you can reach up to 30,000 people a week? Our digital following, combined with a healthy print circulation, is the best means of reaching multiple demographics in Knox County.
Kasey is our Advertising Director, and can work with you to coordinate all of your marketing needs! Give her a call at 606-546-9225 ext. 106 or email kmorris@mountainadvocate.com.
