City School Students Give Back

Barbourville Independent School  students poured time, effort, and a whole lot of elbow grease into the community Thursday,  in their yearly “City School Service Day,” where students spend a few hours at various locations throughout the community painting, cleaning, and refreshing them.
Students could be found spraying down picnic tables and slides, taking soapy sponges to weathered signs, and having a great time together at Thompson Park, Walnut Park, City Park, and Legion Field. And after a morning of hard work, the students then went to Union Commonwealth University (UCU) at noon to enjoy the air conditioning and eat pizza.
Union’s President, Dr. DJ Washington,  spoke to the students, expressing his gratitude for their hard work. “What you are doing and what you’ve done today really helped so many families, so many community organizations, such as us.” Washington said.
Following Washington, Principal Roark of BIS spoke to the students, sharing some words of encouragement, even calling on specific students to recognize their frequent efforts to help around the community. Roark then opened the floor to Pastor Shane Bingham, who lead the students in a prayer before the meal began.
