Knox Deputy resigns after social media gaffe

A photo shared to social media lead to an investigation that has left the Knox County Sheriff’s Office with one less deputy.

On Tuesday, November 14, Sheriff Mike Smith accepted the resignation of John Luttrell following an internal investigation after a photo was sent to WYMT Mountain News. The photo was of Luttrell next to a car where an unconscious woman was found in the driver’s seat. The photo’s caption read “Another day at work.” The condition of the woman is unknown and it is unclear why she was unconscious.

Smith was made aware of the photo Tuesday morning, at which time an investigation into the matter began.

“The Sheriff’s office is committed to providing professional, transparent service to the people of Knox County, and will hold all of its employees to that standard,” Smith said in a statement to The Mountain Advocate on Tuesday.
